Kia ora from New Zealand. I was recently looking at this site and saw an old school Photo with names that rang a bell to my Hartley descendants. My Great Grandfather, Charles Hartley, came to New Zealand with his father David Hartley. They came out to look at the antipodes! Charles met his much loved wife out here and would go on to have many descendants. His father, who had intended to return to westerdale died of a Heart Attack, and hence buried out here.
David was married to Mary Raw and had a number of children who remained in the vicinity of Westerdale. They were at Hall Farm [177 acres I believe]. His eldest son William Hartley married Emma Knaggs

Hi there. My family are also Hartley’s from Westerdale. My Grandfather was David William Hartley, a farmer from Westerdale. My father, his youngest son David, farmed with him. They were tennant farmers, and the landlord would not swap the tenancy into my dads name. Dads siblings were Charles, Jack, William and Mary, all now deseaced. David was very much the family name. I have a cousin David, and also a son David. I hope you find this of interest. RDH.

Hi Robert,
Your information was indeed interesting and I would hazard a guess that you descend from William Hartley who was my Great Grand fathers brother. I guess we are related. While in the UK i did meet up with another Hartley who lived not too far away from York. My email is rewi@xtra.co.nz if you would like any info from this side of the world.

Hi Diane, Grandad farmed at Quarry Farm. I’m not sure how many acres, though dad would have known. I guess we are related too. I have two Hartley cousins in the UK, and one who emigrated to Canada. All have families, so there are plenty of us about, but only me and mine left in the North Riding, now through political stupidity known as North Yorkshire. My daughter lived in Oz for a time, and there is a Hartleys Crocodile Farm there, and rumour has it they were related to us as well. Cheers - Bob
